What a great way to shape 71 young minds and make their experience “Worth Every Nickel”.

The Theme night at Camp Northern Lights is shaping up nicely with entertainment by comedian Derek Edwards and our favourite live local band led by Johnny Williams “The Topes”.
“Be prepared to be entertained and be sure to dress in your best camp attire bearing in mind that you may be photographed in that outfit and pictures are forever. The only rule we have at Camp Northern Lights is to come as you are and be ready to have a good time”. Dress Code as noted above is now posted on the OBOA website http://www.oboa.on.ca/events/ .
The Companion Program is now full with some possible wiggle room. AS noted on the OBOA website. We will be having a meet and greet icebreaker on Sunday September 9, 2012 for the companions so that they can get to know one another before the conference begins. The French Room is located on the main floor at the back of the restaurant.
As a Breast Cancer fundraiser the calendars are now complete and being printed. The calendars feature the theme “REMOVE & EXAMINE”. The challenge! … a photograph featuring "your landscape" with a "pink bra" integrated into the photograph. Thanks go out to Barbara Rusan-Cronmiller, Building/Plumbing Inspector, City of Vaughan and Direct IT: Calendar Design & Printing, who
have volunteered their services once again to make this Endeavour a success!
Also, “Game of Skills” tickets will be sold throughout the Golf Tournament and the Conference with prize draws being held at the Breast Cancer Luncheon. Any donations of gifts or money would be greatly appreciated for our "Silent Auction" and "Game of Skill" contest. There is a great deal of teamwork involved in every conference activity. Thanks to Jim Pitt, Senior Sales Manager at the Holiday Inn , Betty Lillah @ Homewood Suites & Angela Labbe @ Hampton Inn. Sudbury Ontario for all the assistance to date.
In addition there is always the opportunity to cross Regent Street and go to Eddie’s and relax or the RIPE restaurant located 4-5 doors south of the Holiday Inn has a great chocolate martini & dessert “oblivion” . It was my duty to investigate these locations for you, the delegates.

Details:
Exterior insulating sheathings increase the thermal resistance of above grade walls, they reduce the incidence of thermal bridging and can also act as both a weather barrier and as the primary air barrier within the wall assembly.
From a building code perspective these sheathing materials require building officials to understand the code requirements and the underlying building science mechanisms related to:
- Protection from weather and the uncontrolled movement of air and water vapour,
- Wall bracing and sheathing thickness requirements,
- Protection from interstitial moisture,
- Rain shedding including flashing protection around windows and at the bottom of the wall
Building officials should understand the range of product types on the market and the new novel uses these products are beginning to enjoy.
This web-based course utilizes the core material from the in-class sessions delivered to OBOA members. It extends the reach of the in-class course to building officials and municipalities not served by the current in-class offering.

FAQ's will Help with Questions on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (SB 12)? Article #1920
Don't be fooled, this is not a repeat message but rather an important reminder of the SB 12 FAQ's that are available.
Readers are aware that a joint Industry Stakeholder Group was formed to assist with the implementation of the new SB 12 building code requirements. The Group included the following Stakeholders; the Ontario Home Builders Association, Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing, Large Municipality Chief Building Officials and the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA). The building official representatives are David Potter, Tim Benedict and Tim Moore. The joint Industry Stakeholder Group started to meet prior to the SB 12 implementation date of Jan. 1, 2012, and continue to meet to address current issues both from the construction industry and the official perspective.
Shortly after implementation, the Industry Stakeholder Group heard of inconsistent application of the new requirements from both sides and reoccurring questions. The solution was to create a document that would list the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on SB 12. A comprehensive 5-page FAQ would assist with the reoccurring questions and promotes knowledge transfer. The FAQ's are intended to educate and promote consistent application of the code requirements amongst the builders, designers and officials.
What's new in this Newsbyte? Earlier this week, word from the industry that common questions continue, and many, if not all of these questions can be answered via the FAQ. For example;
1. Are you aware of the FAQ list or the whereabouts on the OBOA website, 2. The FAQ clearly answers whether a building official is "to require estar label for occupancy/not to require for occupancy", 3. The FAQ clarifies what a "BOP" form is and if it suffices to provide information regarding home components, and 4. Warning, do not compare ht loss calcs from hvac designer with hot200 ht loss output. This cannot be done. Further info regarding "why" is available on the NRCan hot 2000 website under FAQ's (or get an explanation from a certified evaluator).
The OBOA website is the source for the most-up-to date SB 12 documents produced by the joint Industry Stakeholder Group. The OBOA would like to acknowledge and thank tyhe embers of the joint Industry Stakeholder Group because the posted docuemtns are a direct result of their time and effort. Should you have a question or comment on SB 12, feel free to contact OBOA reps directly; David Potter, Town of Newmarket @ dpotter@newmarket.ca or Tim Benedict, City of Kitchener @ tim.benedict@kitchener.ca
Striving to communicate and share the wealth with OBOA members and non-members.
Mike Seiling, OBOA Vice President, 519.741.2669

Breast Cancer Committee Article #1916
Community Engagement formerly Corporate Charity Fundraising |
 |
The Breast Cancer Committee has been working hard again this year! They are excited to announce that with the help of Direct IT and a number of Municipalities there will be a 2013 breast cancer calendar available for purchase! The calendar this year represents the beauty of the province showcasing scenic and historical locations of various Municipalities across the province.
At the 2011 AMTS in London almost 300 calendars were sold! An overwhelming and positive response for the first year! This year we are hoping to match and exceed that fundraising goal. Of course this can’t be done without all of your help! Along with the at conference sales, presales of the calendars are available for order this year. The calendars are only $10 each, a small donation for a much needed cause! It’s so easy - just place your personal or office order ahead of time then pay for and pick up your calendar package when you register at the AMTS in Sudbury! (Note: corporation cheques, debit and credit cards are acceptable)
Don’t miss out this year, please email Barbara Rusan-Cronmiller at barbara.rusan-cronmiller@vaughan.ca to place your pre-conference calendar order today.

"Quick Check for Farm Structures" Now Available Article #1741
The new “Quick Check for Farm Structures” flipchart is now hot off the presses and available for purchase. Check the OBOA website www.oboa.on.ca for ordering information.
This is a wonderful new tool similar to and inspired by the “Quick Check for Housing” flipchart. This tool has been developed in collaboration with OMAFRA and MOE. The OBOA was well represented by Building Officials from Oxford County, led by recently retired Jim Harmer.
This flipchart covers the recently revised procedural changes introduced by OMAFRA to streamline the Nutrient Management Plan approvals process required prior to the issuance of building permits. Examples of the new forms are contained in the Appendices of this flipchart.
In conjunction with the release of this new tool, OMAFRA and OBOA are offering a half day workshop to further explain the flipchart and how to use it. The workshop is being offered through our Chapter Network, so if you are interested in attending a workshop in your area, contact your Chapter Chair. For those who are interested, OMAFRA is also prepared to offer a half day workshop in conjunction with the “Quick Check” workshop to delve deeper into MDS (Minimum Distance Separation) and/or NMP (Nutrient Management Plan) training – again, contact your Chapter Chair.
Training Objectives of the “Quick Check” workshop:
