"Quick Check for Farm Structures" Now Available
Article #1741

The new “Quick Check for Farm Structures” flipchart is now hot off the presses and available for purchase.  Check the OBOA website www.oboa.on.ca for ordering information.

This is a wonderful new tool similar to and inspired by the “Quick Check for Housing” flipchart.  This tool has been developed in collaboration with OMAFRA and MOE.
The OBOA was well represented by Building Officials from Oxford County, led by recently retired Jim Harmer.

This flipchart covers the recently revised procedural changes introduced by OMAFRA to streamline the Nutrient Management Plan approvals process required prior to the issuance of building permits.
Examples of the new forms are contained in the Appendices of this flipchart.

In conjunction with the release of this new tool, OMAFRA and OBOA are offering a half day workshop to further explain the flipchart and how to use it.  The workshop is being offered through our Chapter Network, so if you are interested in attending a workshop in your area, contact your Chapter Chair.  For those who are interested, OMAFRA is also prepared to offer a half day workshop in conjunction with the “Quick Check” workshop to delve deeper into MDS (Minimum Distance Separation) and/or NMP (Nutrient Management Plan) training – again, contact your Chapter Chair.

Training Objectives of the “Quick Check” workshop:

  • Inform building inspectors of the contents of the Quick Check
  • Review key components of a Nutrient Management Plan
  • When a Nutrient Management Strategy is required
  • Nutrient storage siting
  • Contents of the Record of Approval
  • Engineering requirements
  • Minimum Distance Separation
  • Building Permit Checklist for Livestock Buildings

Education and Training - New Courses Coming Soon
Article #1742

On February 9th the Board of Directors approved the funding for the development of a new OBOA SB12 training course. Michael Lio of Lio & Associates is preparing this new 2 day course for the OBOA which should be ready for delivery by mid April 2012.

Currently, we are also finalizing an agreement with HROI Inc. and Dow Corning regarding a new EIS (Exterior Insulating Sheathing) online course which will be available for delivery this spring. Further details will follow when the course is ready for delivery.

In addition, discussions are ongoing with the Canadian Onsite Wastewater Institute for the OBOA to offer their web based Onsite Wastewater course. This is a new training model for the OBOA and we look forward to offering this course online. We hope to have this course available for delivery this spring.
Further details will follow when the course is ready for delivery.

Please feel free to contact Pier De Simone, Education & Training Chair at pdesimone@city.windsor.on.ca if you have any questions on these initiatives.

Safe and efficient construction in our communities requires a high caliber of expertise among municipal building officials, builders, design professionals and other Building Code users. Keeping up-to-date on the Building Code also promotes building safety and efficient construction within the province. Those involved in the enforcement of the Building Code Act and Regulations as well as people involved in the design and supervision of construction must also keep abreast of new techniques and current Building Code requirements.

As an authorized delivery agent for the MMAH the OBOA's courses are designed assuming that the participants have the prerequisite knowledge to begin the course. In some cases, the prerequisite knowledge is contained in other courses, which should be completed before you begin your chosen course. If you choose not to take the prerequisite course, you should acquire the knowledge through other means. Training Courses are delivered in an adult learning environment. This training is has been developed and intended to be delivered to a larger percentage of what is to be considered municipal building officials, builders, design professionals and other Building Code users, a Ministry recommended timeline is enforced while participating in classes focusing on the building code. Training is delivered in a set environment.

All courses require the student to have their own copy of the latest edition of the Ontario Building Code. In addition, some courses will require that the student have their own copy of certain reference material including, Supplementary Guidelines, Referenced Standards and other supporting material such as a calculator.

Chapter Liaison Chair Report
Article #1739

The Chapter Network in an inaugural part of the OBOA. I would encourage all OBOA members to join their local Chapter and attend the local Chapter meetings.
These meetings initiate the information and discussion needed to keep the OBOA active and always moving forward. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to discuss with your Chapter Chair.
The Chapter Chair can bring these items forward at the Chapter Chairs meeting coming up in April.

The Next Chapter Chairs meeting is scheduled for April 13th and 14th in Toronto at the Holiday Inn (Toronto International Airport). Friday April 13th will be the Chapter Chairs Dinner, and Saturday April 14th is the meeting. Further details will follow.

The Tom Powdrill Award (Chapter of the Year) is awarded to the Chapter who have fulfilled or exceeded the duties of a Chapter in a timely manner and has demonstrated a proactive participation in furthering the aims and objectives of the Association by hosting educational courses and seminars. This year’s Theme “Implementing the Plan” reflects the Strategic Plan 2012+. Chapter Chairs will receive additional information on the Tom Powdrill Award via e-mail.

Your Chapter Chairs have been submitting their Chapter Annual Reports. The reports received are listed on the OBOA website at http://www.oboa.on.ca/cgi-bin/areports/.
Please continue to submit your reports by the April Chapter Chairs meeting. It would be a great achievement to have all the reports in by this time, succeeding the previous record held by Alan Shaw (previous CC Liaison) of 21 out of 22.

Respectfully Submitted:

Norm Allen, CBCO, CRBO
Chapter Liaison Chair
